Region 8 conference tackles creation of peace and development councils

Tacloban City (August 29) -- In a bid to hasten the development and end the insurgency problems in the Region, the military is pushing for the creation of Peace and Order Councils in Eastern Visayas.

In this connection, a special conference cum consultation is scheduled to be conducted on September 9, 2008 at exactly 9:00 o'clock in the morning at the 8th Infantry Division Conference Room in Catbalogan City, Brigadier General Arthur I. Tabaquero, commander of the 8ID, informed.

Brigadier General Tabaquero said that the conference is the aftermath of the recently concluded Regional Peace and Order Council meeting where the 8ID presented a proposal on the creation of Samar Island Peace and Development Council and the Leyte Islands Peace and Development Council, to focus the implementation of peace and order and development initiatives in those areas to uplift the living condition of the populace particularly the marginalized ones.

Upon the recommendation of the 8th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army, Resolution No. 02 series of 2008 was passed by the Regional Peace and Order Council of Eastern Visayas which is chaired by Eastern Samar Governor Ben Evardone, calling for the organization of a core group that will study the proposed Peace and Development body.

The Core group will study and make recommendations to the Regional Peace and Order Council on the feasibility of the proposed Peace and Development body.

As envisioned by General Tabaquero, the councils will be tasked of overseeing and coordinating the implementation of peace and development programs and projects in the islands. He added that the officers of each council could be appointed or elected from among the local chief executives and local government leaders and officials. (PIA 8) [top]
