PIA Press Release

RP workers may get early 13th month pay

by A. Lumaque Roxas City (4 November) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) directed employers to grant the mandated 13th month pay to their workers way ahead of the Christmas season.

"Employers should give the 13th month pay so their workers could buy the things they need for the holiday season early and enjoy lower prices," Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said in a Philstar.com news.

Employers are obliged to provide their workers 13th month and other mandatory financial benefits even with the prevailing economic crisis, Roque added.

Meanwhile, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has assured government employees that they will receive their much-awaited Christmas bonus for this year but not before November 15.

"The President is very generous when it comes to that. We should not worry," Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya told a radio interview when asked if state workers will be receiving their Christmas bonus this year.

However, he turned down the proposal for an early release of the bonus since the government had just raised salaries of state employees last July. (PIA) [top]
