Lugait town, Misamis Oriental benefit from TransCo free medical-dental outreach

by Beth A. Ladaga

Cagayan de Oro City (4 November) -- Some 500 residents of Lower and Upper Talacogon and Aya-aya villages in Lugait town, Misamis Oriental recently received free dental and medical services from the National Transmission Corporation (TransCo), including minor surgery for sebaceous cyst.

Spearheaded by Transco Lanao Area, the outreach was in partnership with the Misamis Oriental-1 Rural Electric Service Cooperative, Inc. (MORESCO-UNO) and the Local Government of Lugait.

Doctors and nurses from Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital in Iligan City and dentists from the German Doctors Hospital based in Cagayan de Oro City were the guest medical volunteers.

Prior to the outreach, a short program was held where Lugait town Mayor Willie Lim expressed thanks to all who contributed to the success of the activity.

He applauded the initiative of Vice Mayor Jay Michael Manlawe, Chair of the Committee on Health, for bringing together resources from the different offices for the day's undertaking.

TransCo Lanao Area Department Manager Avelino Dawis also thanked the residents for accepting and supporting the joint project.

Dawis emphasized that it was TransCo's first time to hold a free medical & dental clinic in the area since the installation of Lugait Substation in 1978, although TransCo provided other forms of community support to the village.

The TransCo Medical Team was headed by Ms. Melo Jane A. Sarmiento, M.D., provided the medical consultations and medicines for common illnesses such as anti-biotic, as well as giving practical health tips to the patients.

MORESCO-I, the electric cooperative that operates within the franchise area of Lugait town, also shared some medicines and supplied the snacks for the volunteers, including the patients.

The Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital team led by Dr. Edcel Cabaluna handled the Sebaceous Gland Minor Surgery done on 34 patients.

Other patients checked by the team were advised to go the nearest hospital for better handling of their cases, in view of the possibility of some complications. (TransCo) [top]
