MEDCO chair bats for creation of Mindanao Economic Development Authority

ICC Cotabato City (4 November) -- The Mindanao Economic Development Council Chairman is pushing for the creation of the Mindanao Economic Development Authority (MEDA) to accelerate the development of Mindanao through an integrated and consolidated approach in solving the multi-faceted problems thereat.

Undersecretary Virgilio L. Leyretana, chairman, Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCO), said the need for consistency and permanent mechanism that will ensure the continuity of the development efforts of Mindanao.

"Putol-putol ang development sa Mindanao. Walang consistency sa policy. Walang assurance sa 2010 na magkakaroon ng patuloy na supporta dito. We have to come to terms to the situation in Mindanao and continue to push for its inclusion to the national spectrum of development," Leyretana pointed out.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has been very supportive to the peace and development of Mindanao from the very start. When she was a senator in 1986, she co-sponsored the MEDCO bill with Senator Santanina Rasul which reached up to second reading but was vetoed by then President Corazon C. Aquino who instead issued Executive Order.192 creating Mindanao Economic Development Office (MEDCO).

Usec Leyretana is thankful for the sponsorship of Representative Semion Datumanong of the lone district of Maguindanao and Representative Datu Pax Mangudadatu of the first district of Sultan Kudarat of House Bill no. 5255 creating MEDA. He hopes for the expeditious passage of the Bill to promote the best interest of all Mindanaoans. (PIA 12) [top]
