by Vency D. Bulayungan

Lagawe, Ifugao (7 November) -- Leading the youth in efforts to help cushion the impact of global warming and financial crisis, two Senior Girl Scouts here will be awarded with medals by no less than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on November 28, 2008 at Malacanang.

Fely Gumangan, the Provincial Officer of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) here said that Vicenta Buy-ag and Syndy Ullani who are both Senior Scouts of the Ifugao Council will be among those from the six regions of the GSP to receive their medals from the President. There 322 chief Girl Scout Medalists from the different regions in the country who are awardees.

"Both students initiated Community Development Service Projects under the Chief Girl Scout Medal Scheme which is a program of the GSP for the Senior Girl Scouts," Gumangan said.

Buy-ag, a student of the Haliap National High School in the Municipality of Asipulo, worked on Ecology, particularly cleanliness, beautification and landscaping of the abandoned Barangay Hall of Barangay Panubtuban in Asipulo.

On the other hand, Ullani worked on swine raising and dispersal project in Barangay Namillangan in her hometown at Alfonso Lista "Their projects were successful and worth emulating because of the enormous support and cooperation of the Barangay Officials, Sanguniang Kabataan, school officials, patrol and family members and the community people," Gumangan said.

The scheme for the Chief Girl Scout Medal is a Central Board decision in 1976 to recognize Senior Girl Scouts, who meet the criteria for outstanding service to their community. This is built on the Girl Scout's concept of developing the total girl, making her well rounded in all aspects - spiritual, physical, mental, emotional and social.

The chief Girl Scout Medal is a continuing incentive that senior or cadet girl scouts can aspire for as they become actively involved in the conduct of community and national affairs. (PIA-Ifugao) [top]
