Davao City (8 November) -- Five volunteer groups that support the five rehabilitation centers of DSWD have been organized to assist the centers in program implementation and resource mobilization.

DSWD Regional Director Ester Acebedo-Versoza said the 'Friends' of DSWD Centers come from government, non-government, faith-based groups, academe, civil society, business sector and some private citizens, and their names have been entered in the Registry of DSWD Volunteers.
Members hail from institutions such as Zonta, Kiwanis Club, Philippine Airforce, PICPA, DepEd, POGS, Teresian Word Ministry, Dominican Sisters, Philippine Nikkie Jin Kai, Youth With A Mission, Philippine Association of Social Workers, Inc. According to Acebedo-Versoza these DSWD volunteer groups have undergone the DSWD Bayanihang Bayan Volunteer Program orientation and drafted their respective Constitution and By-Laws. Each group also conducts regular meetings for planning and evaluation as well as various fund-raising drives and bazaars to access resources, Acebedo-Versoza further said.
The volunteer groups are instrumental in the physical, social, and spiritual development of center residents as they also initiate enhancement of center facilities. Notable contributions include skills training for center staff and residents, educational grants and literacy sessions, facilitation for lot and cash donations, medical and dental examination and referrals, legal assistance, job placement for released residents, marketing of products made by residents, construction and repair of facilities, and lot and equipment acquisition.
"As far as the different programs of RRCY is concerned, we believe the Friends of RRCY can be an arm to promote all these programs and to fund in resources," stressed Araceli M. Layog, PASWI Chapter Officer and Acting President of the Friends of DSWD-RRCY.
Further, social events of volunteer members like birthdays, anniversaries or thanksgiving bash are also conducted in the centers, fostering camaraderie and harmony among donors, volunteers, staff and residents.
"Our centers will always welcome individuals and groups who are willing to serve and provide opportunities to the disadvantaged members in our community. I urge everyone from all walks of life, students and professionals to join the DSWD Volunteers," Acebedo-Versoza enthused. (DSWD/degsduron-PIA XI) [top]
