Region 8 celebrates Nat'l Correctional Consciousness Week
Tacloban City (November 10) -- Eastern Visayas celebrates the 14th National Correctional Consciousness Week through various activities conducted of the provincial field offices in jails and in the community.
Ms. Janette Avorque, the Regional Information Officer so the Parole and Probation Administration Region 8 said that the bottom line of the celebration is to ensure the participation of both public and private sectors in helping jails, detention centers, prisons and all community-based projects so that the rehabilitation of the inmates is facilitated.
The Tacloban City PPO thru Chief Carolina R. Corpin conducted interviews and assisted twenty-two inmates during the "sumpay Katalwasan" jail decongestion activity at the Tacloban City Jail on October 28.
Jail visits and the conduct of information drive in their respective areas of jurisdiction were conducted by the PPO field offices in Leyte, Southern Leyte, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Ormoc City, Maasin City and Baybay City.
Maasin City PPO conducted a two-day Orientation and Basic Training for twenty-four Volunteer Probation Aids and specialized training on Restorative Justice was conducted on October 28-30, with ARD Josefina Singco as resource speaker.
For community service, the Leyte PPO and the Ormoc City PPO conducted a tree planting activity; while the Southern Leyte PPO clients conducted a clean-up drive at the Sogod Municipal Plaza after they were given vegetable seedlings to be planted at their respective backyards.
PPO Biliran and PPO Calbayog City conducted separate trainings on Therapeutic Community Modality to 42 inmates at the Biliran Provincial Jail and to 30 inmates at the Calbayog City Jail.
Samar PPO, together with the Courts, Public Attorneys Office, and Prosecution officials, participated in a Motorcade, opening program consultative meeting and jail decongestion activity, held at the Samar Provincial Jail in Catbalogan City.
Moreover, Northern Samar PPO marked the celebration during the National Prison Awareness Sunday on October 26, through a Holy Mass participated in by the clients.
The region wide celebration of the National Correctional Consciousness Week adopted the theme of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines for the Prison Awareness Sunday, "Pag-ibig Mo: Tanglaw, Gabay at Lakas Ko."
The theme underscores the PPA-DOJ concept of Restorative Justice paradigm that moves beyond punishment and addresses the primordial need to seek humanity in the wrongdoers. Rather than measuring how much punishment is inflicted, restorative justice measures how much harm are repaired and prevented. (PIA 8) [top]
