PIA-8 awards winners for Statistics Month Siday writing contest

By Neil D. Lopido

Tacloban City (November 12) -- The Philippine Information Agency Regional Office 8, this city, through its dynamic regional director Erlinda Olivia P. Tiu conducted recently the awarding of winners for the Poetry (Siday) Writing Contest in line with the celebration of the 19th National Statistics Month.

Director Tiu handed the cash prizes and certificates of recognition to the three young grand prize winners, namely, Rogelio O. Jomadiao of Tacloban City; Mario A. Narrido of San Miguel, Leyte; and Marilou R. Gayas of Alangalang, Leyte.

During the simple awarding ceremony, Director Tiu gave also cash prizes to the daily winners in recognition also to their effort and support to the information dissemination endeavor of the agency in attaining the goal of this year's NSM theme, "Demand-Driven Statistics: Key to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development."

The contest highlighted the need to shift from supply-driven to demand/user-driven generation of data thereby enabling a more comprehensive, reliable and up-to-date set of MSME statistics.

It also emphasized the role of statistics in business promotion and development, specifically in micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). It is aimed at promoting best practices in the use of statistics in growing a business and in encouraging entrepreneurs - and the public in general - to use statistics to succeed in business.

Director Tiu encouraged the winners to continue their passion in siday writing as she herself is one of the advocates of reviving and preserving Waray literature.

Moreover, Director Tiu assured the winners that she will make the same contest in the years to come with more attractive prizes.

The second year of PIA-8 Siday Contest is a collaborative effort together with the DYVL Aksyon Radyo Tacloban thru Ms. Francisca "Babes" Custodio and the Municipality of Tanuan, Leyte thru Mayor Roque A. Tiu.

The month of October was celebrated as National Statistics Month pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society. (PIA-8) [top]
