Kalibo, Aklan (12 November) -- The province of Aklan will be launching a contest on regreening and beautification of its national highways and provincial roads.
According to Aklan Governor Carlito S. Marquez, the contest aims to restore what has been damaged by Typhoon Frank to the existing flowering and ornamental plants along the national highway and provincial roads and to transform the areas into a tourist attraction for the tourists and guests going to Boracay Island and those taking the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH).
With the contest, the provincial government hopes that Aklan will have value-added tourist attractions aside from its major destinations, and would serve as a continuous effort in the enhancement of the province' tourist industry towards being world-class and globally competitive.
The contest, dubbed "Aklan Regreening and Beautification Project, is open to all barangays and residential owners located along main provincial roads and national highways, according to Roselle Q. Ruiz, Supervising Tourism Operations Officer of the Provincial Tourism Office and project coordinator.
"Participating barangays shall be divided into two segments: the eastern and western districts. To start this project, each participating barangay will be provided with a financial subsidy of P10,000, gardening tools (one rake and two shovels) and the assistance of the Provincial Engineer's Office. There will be a separate contest among residential owners with corresponding prizes," said Ruiz in a project brief she sent to various government offices and media outlets to inform them about the contest.
The project is divided into three phases: 1st phase - Media Launching on Nov. 28; 2nd phase - judging of entries, preliminary - Jan. 2009 and 3rd phase - Awarding of winners, April 2009, Aklan Day Celebration.
Awarding of winners will be done during the Aklan Day Celebration on April 25, 2009. Cash prizes and certificates will be given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of both Eastern and Western towns of the province, as well as for residential participants.
At stake are the following prizes: For Barangays - 1st Prize, P100,000; 2nd Prize, P75,000 and 3rd, P50,000. For Residential : 1st Prize, P30,000; 2nd, P20,000; and 3rd, P10,000.
The contest will be carried out in coordination with partner agencies and institutions like the DENR, DILG, DOT, DepEd, Congressional District Office, Sangguniang Panlalawigan, Liga ng Mga Barangay, Sangguniang Kabataan, League of Municipalities, Bangon Aklan and other coordinating agencies and organizations.
The contest will be launched simultaneously on November 28, 2008 at the Godofredo P. Ramos Park with the holding of the province of its Alay Lakad-Alay Linis activity.
The Alay Lakad-Alay Linis activity will be held in lieu with the usual walk done yearly in the month of September for the benefit of out-of-school youth. This year, the activity, which was delayed by the typhoon, will be observed through a clean-up drive within Kalibo to clear the town of uncollected garbage and debris left by Typhoon Frank when it struck Aklan last June 21.
