Iloilo City (13 November) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is urging residents of project affected families in the Iloilo Flood Control Project to get involved in River Easement Project in protecting and managing the rivers.
The Water Code of the Philippines says that "the bank of river and stream and the shore of the sea and throughout their entire length within the zone of three meters in urban areas, 20 meters in agricultural areas and 40 meters in forest areas along their margin are subject to the easement of public use in the interest of recreation, navigation, floatage, fishing, salvage..."
DENR 6 Technical Dir. Bienvenido Lipayon told the Barangay Captains of the Project-influenced barangays in Pavia and in Iloilo City that enforcing the River Easement is important in the preservation of ecological balance, preservation of the biodiversity and protection of the environment as a whole.
"If this law is conscientiously followed, our rivers will be protected from indiscriminate throwing of garbage and occupancy of illegal settlers along the Project-influenced areas," Lipayon said.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), on the other hand, said that implementing the River Easement ordinances in the local government units (LGUs) of Project-Influenced barangays can help much in sustaining the Iloilo Flood Control project.
Recently the DPWH led in the series of workshops to assist the barangays in preparing an Operations and Maintenance Implementation Plan (OMIP) as a measure for sustainability of the project. (PIA 6) [top]
