USLS tops 17th PSQ Negros elimination, set for regional finals
Negros Occidental (13 November) -- A college freshman from University of St. La Salle, Angie Lyn Barcoma, tops the recently concluded 17th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Provincial Elimination.
Tailing behind Barcoma is another La Sallian, Hazel Joy Surriga while Rhanjee L. Ibañez of the Technological University of the Philippines - Visayas got the third place.
A total of 14 college freshmen from the University of St. La Salle, Technological University of the Philippines- Visayas, Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, West Negros University, ABE-International Business College, Bago City College and the La Carlota City College participated in the 17th Provincial PSQ.
The provincial elimination was held at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol with judges from the Department of Trade and Industry, Negros Occidental High School and the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics.
Barcoma earned 13 points out of 20 items in a two round quiz with ten questions per round.
The top three finalists are sent to the Regional Eliminations, today (November 13, 2008) in Iloilo City. The finalists are accompanied by their respective coaches, Ms. Ma. Teresa F. Golez of USLS and Mr. Jefferey Nepomuceno of TUP-V.
The Negros Occidental representatives vie for the regional title against the representatives from four other provinces in the region. The regional champion will then represent Region VI to the National Finals which will be held in Manila on December 4, 2008.
PSQ is a nationwide search for young statistics whizzes began in 1992 as part of the celebration of the National Statistics Month celebration. This was organized by the NSO and the Philippine Statistical Association (PSA) – a non-stock, non-profit organization of professional statisticians from the government and the private sector as well as the academe.
