PNP bares highlights of Drug Abuse Prevention Week in Antique

San Jose, Antique (17 November) -- This year's highlights of Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Week included the massive information dissemination geared towards reduction of demand and supply of illegal drugs, bared PNP Information Officer Rodel Canja.
A series of information drive were conducted in selected schools and in the barangays in order to heighten the people's awareness on the menace of illegal drugs and for the community to support the campaign against illegal drugs, the source said.
The 3rd week of November of every year pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 214 has been declared Drug abuse Prevention and Control Week. The event was observed from November 9-15, with this year's theme anchored on "Do Drugs Control Your Life", Your Life, Your Community, No Place for Drugs".
The nationwide event featured the significant role of family as basic unit of society and as a prime mover in drug and control prevention within the family circle.
The family being part of the community has become the focus of this significant occasion as it goes with the intensification of the role of families in drug abuse prevention and control campaign as exemplified by the sub theme "Pamilyang Nakakaisa Laban sa Droga," PIA report stated.
The PNP from January to October 2008 had conducted 8 buy bust, search and seizure operations provincewide, which led to the arrest of 8 persons and corresponding cases were filed in court, the PNP Information Officer disclosed.
The operations resulted to the recovery of substantial quantity of shabu and dried marijuana leaves, PO2 Canja revealed.
The PNP here disclosed the need for a permanent PDEA representative inorder to strengthen the crusade against illegal drugs. With permanent officer from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency assigned here, operations could be conducted with dispatch, the PNP Officer stressed.
The PNP will soon have a Crime Laboratory, the construction is going on which when completed will boost campaign against illegal drugs, the source revealed.
The crime laboratory here could hasten the neutralization of the proliferation of illegal drugs for instead of sending materials and pieces of evidence to the PNP crime laboratory in the Regional Office, the laboratory examination could be conducted here without delay, Canja clarified.
The entire police leadership strongly supports the national government's anti-drug campaign with the ultimate goal of attaining a drug free Philippines by 2010, the source added. (PIA) [top]
