Butuan City proclaimed as Child-Friendly City

Butuan City (17 November) -- Butuan City, being the Regional Winner in the 2008 Search foPresidential Awards for Child Friendly City under the highly urbanized city category is another milestone of Mayor Democrito Plaza II's notable service to the city government together with the composite members of the institution.

a letter from Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Director Mercedita P. Jabagat, she said Butuan City demonstrated exceptional efforts of advancing the interest of children as clearly explicated in its programs and activities justifying the Regional Awards Committee to endorse the city as Caraga's Regional Winner for three (3) consecutive years.

this significant achievement, fifty thousand (Php 50,000.00) pesos cash prize is awarded to the city government of Butuan to further enhance its projects on child interests and welfare.

the programs and projects that which gave high impact in selecting the city as winner for a third year in a row is the "Tuloy Aral Walang Sagabal" (TAWAG), catering differently-abled and handicapped children for advocating 3R's of learning, likewise inculcating moral recovery and spiritual values formation which also received a Presidential Award particularly the "Galing Pook" award for LGU's Best Practices.

projects are Lingap Center, a temporary shelter for street children; Kangyatan Hong Kabataan; Population Awareness and Family Life Orientation Seminar; Leadership Training Seminar; and Out-of-School Youths activities.

city government of Butuan, through the City Social Welfare and Development Officer Ms. Aldebran Mordeno consistently delivers social services in coordination with other government line agencies to the 86 barangays by conducting child immunization, reproductive health care seminars, mass feeding during barangay visitations, livelihood skills training seminars, financial assistance in times of natural and man-made calamities.
