RORO hi-way ferry system spurs inter-island farm trade - PGMA
ICC Iligan City (18 November) -- The roll-on roll-of (RORO) highway and ferry system has spurred inter-island farm trade by improving the distribution of basic goods, reducing travel time and transportation costs and promoting domestic tourism.
Thus reported Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during her recent visit in Lanao del Norte to pay homage and respect for the place where she spent part of her childhood at the Timoga Cold Springs in Barangay Buruun, Iligan City.
The President flew in directly to the province from her trip to New York where she addressed the UN General Assembly on the Promotion of Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, upon invitation of the King of Saudi Arabia.
She said the RORO Ports System is an intricate network of "improved" roads and ports in various regions which bridge the country's three main islands: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Through the system, the delivery of basic goods and farm produce, such as, vegetables and livestock is made more easy, economical and efficient as travel time to and from destinations, as well, as transportation costs are considerably reduced.
In the Western Nautical Highway, travel time from Mindanao to Luzon, the President said, which would take 36 hours has now been reduced to 24 hours only and the freight cost lowered to 30%.
Thus, the transportation cost of a 10-wheeler cargo truck at P32,000 per trip from Dapitan City to Batangas has now also been reduced to only P11,000 per trip, the President further said.
Meanwhile, Pres. arroyo has underscored the improvement of bridges and air ports in Mindanao for the products of the island to reach other destinations, both domestic and foreign.
Thus, she said the Laguindingan International Airport in Misamis Oriental is under construction, the Zamboanga Airport has been re-painted while the rehabilitation of the Ozamiz Airport had already completed.
"We also have solar power plant in Cagayan de Oro and the new 200 megawatt local power plant inside the PHIVIDEC Industrial Authority at the PIE-MO in Tagoloan, Mis. Or.," the President said.
"These projects are helping in the improvement of the agri-business in Mindanao and will give higher income to the farmers, improve the business and can create more jobs," she said. (EOR/PIA 10) [top]
