NVizcaya town bags CROWN award on nutrition program
Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (19 November) -- The town of Aritao in this province recently romped away with this year's Nutrition Honor Award for maintaining its Green Banner and CROWN Award for six consecutive years.
The award, given by the organizers of this year's search for best nutrition programs in the country by the National Nutrition Council(NNC) aims to recognize outstanding accomplishments of local government units and barangay nutrition scholars on the improvement of nutrition in their respective communities.
Rhodora Maestre, regional nutrition program coordinator said Aritao's nutrition program was recognized as such because of its notable reduction in the prevalence of underweight pre-school and school children in the municipality, from 2.2% to 0.97% and 2.7% to 1.5% for the period 2005 to 2007, respectively.
The Council also cited the outstanding nutrition programs and strategies implemented by local government unit such as: the provision of nutrition programs focusing on their poorest families and most malnourished children, supplementary feeding augmented by backyard gardening and malunggay propagation, provision of economic and livelihood assistance projects such as Pangkabuhayan Package to mothers, Sulong Pangkabuhayan para sa Kababaihan offered through the Department of Trade and Industry(DTI)-initiated one-town, one-product project, short term loans, and low-interest loans as start-up capital for commercial squash production among farmers.
The NNC also commended the strategies adopted by the LGU's nutrition committee in generating funds to sustain various projects and its excellent alliance and collaboration with the private sector.
"Sound nutrition programs at the local level shall serve as hedge against possible prevalence of malnutrition and other health cases as Filipinos tighten their belts in view of the increase in commodity prices and reduced purchasing power of the peso," the NNC stressed.
Other LGU awardees in Cagayan Valley were the municipality of Mahatao in the country's northernmost province of Batanes, bagging a CROWN Award. Being a sixth class municipality in a fifth class province, Mahatao did not deter the town's nutrition council to implement its essential programs while the province of Cagayan also garnered its Second Year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Maintenance Award in recognition to its exemplary nutrition projects initiated by the Provincial Nutrition Council(PNC) throughout the province's 28 municipalities.
