Runggiyan holds 5th annual "Sumpay Sangkay" walkathon

By Marivic A. Alcober

Tacloban City (November 19) -- The Runggiyan Social Development Foundation, Inc. (RSDFI) through its Executive Director Paulina L. Nayra, will hold the "5th Sumpay Sankay '08", the foundation's annual dawn walkathon, across the San Juanico Bridge this coming December 7, Sunday, at 6:00 a.m.

Incidentally, the 5th Sumpay Sankay activity, which will be concluded through a mini concert and awarding of prizes, coincides with the observance of the 18 Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, which is centered on the theme "Human Rights for Women, Human Rights for All".

According to Dir. Nayra, the annual San Juanico Bridge Walkathon aims to raise enough funds to send more disadvantaged children to school, offer shelter and counseling to abused women and children, and engage in more valuable activities to advocate for women's rights. Likewise, Nayra shared that another purpose of the activity is to promote the involvement of men in the campaign for the fight for violence against women.

Usually, the annual Sumpay Sangkay Walkathon, Nayra shared, is participated in by people from all walks of life, to include high school and college students, members of government and non-government organizations, among others.

In order to finance Runggiyan's programs and projects intended for the disadvantaged women and children, Nayra said that a registration fee for the activity will be collected which will be as follows: P150.00 for adults, P80.00 for college and high school students, and P250.00 for a family of five composed of two adults and three children. On the other hand, a group with ten registrants gets a free registration for one.

Director Nayra invites interested parties who want to participate in the 5th Sumpay Sangkay Walkathon across the San Juanico Bridge to register through authorized representatives of the RSDFI or through Alvin with Cell No. 0928-38808269 or one may call Tel. No. (053) 523-5903. (PIA-8) [top]
