Another ASG member seized in Sulu

Sulu (24 November) -- Another member of the Abu Sayyaf Group was arrested by Marine troops in the province of Sulu last week.

3rd Marine Brigade Commander Col Eugenio Clemen PN (M) identified the notorious member of the ASG's Urban Terrorist Group as Almid Jundam, a resident of Brgy Lantong of Maimbung Municipality.

According to Col Clemen, Jundam, a follower of ASG sub-leader Gafur Jumdail, a bomb expert, was captured at Brgy Walled City of Jolo municipality, while the said suspect was about to withdraw money.

The arresting elements of the 3rd Mbde and the 4th Marine Battalion Landing Team under Lt Col Ariel Caculitan PN (M), who responded after civilian informants volunteered information, recovered from the suspect a wig and one upper camouflage uniform placed inside his belt bag.

Initial inquest revealed that he is responsible in setting up an improvised explosive device in Sulu's airport extension last Nov 15, 2008, which was detonated by Explosive Ordnance Detachment Team of this Unit. Further, he admitted to have planted an IED in the vicinity of a Cathedral in Zamboanga City sometime in 2007.

He is also one of the suspects in the fatal shooting of Khomieni Sawadjaan, 23, and Ubay Damsik, 60, on 08 Oct 2008 at Brgy Alat of Indanan Municipality. He was positively identified by Khomieni's mother Mira Sawadjaan who witnessed the said shooting incident.

Meanwhile, Joint Task Force Comet Commander Maj Gen Juancho M Sabban said that the recent development is another success story in the crackdown against the Abu Sayaff Group.

"We uphold the people's steadfast stance against the employment of illegal and deadly explosives as one of the acts of terrorism," Maj Gen Sabban said.

"We greatly appreciate the support of the people, who share the same vision: a peaceful atmosphere more conducive for development. This accomplishment indicates the trust and confidence bestowed to us by the peace-loving people of Sulu. The ASG's complete downfall is imperative for our people to fully enjoy their rights to lasting peace," he added.

Last Nov 5, ASG sub-leader Sakirin Andalan Sali alias Kirih-Kirih who carries a P2-million bounty for his capture was arrested here by Marine troops, while Faidar Hadjadi alias Abu Solomon with P 300,000 reward for his arrest was killed in a firefight on 14 Nov.

Jundam is currently under the custody of the 3rd Mbde. (42CRU, 4CRG, CRSAFP/PIA-BASULTA) [top]
