RCDC-10 calls for more consultations on Coop Code amendments
by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob
Cagayan de Oro City (25 November) -- The Regional Cooperative Development Council (RCDC), Region 10, has called on the local legislators to conduct further consultations and listen to the voice of the people instead of listening to just a few vested interest groups.
The call was sounded by Atty. Isidro Q. Lico, Chairperson of RCDC-10, during today's press conference, even as he appeals for a review of the amendments of Republic Act 6938 adopted by the bicameral committee of both Houses of Representatives and the Senate headed by Senator Francis "Chiz" G. Escudero.
These amendments which are adopted from the position paper introduced by the National Electrification Administration (NEA) and the Philippine Rural Electric Cooperatives Association (PHILRECA) seek to amend by deleting provisions of the Cooperative Code of the Philippines.
Lico said the amendments include the removal of the provision penalizing entities using the name "Cooperative" which are not registered with the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) and the exclusion of electric cooperatives (EC) on the mandatory registration with the agency.
"We will not only stop publicizing this issue until Congress musters enough political will to create a fight policy environment to make cooperativism an instrument to democratize wealth and power in a highly skewed societal order," the RCDC-10 Chairperson said. (PIA-10) [top]
