Negros Occidental to build P4-M animal breeding and genetic improvement center
Negros Occidental (26 November) -- In line with the thrust of the national government on food sufficiency, a P4-M Animal Breeding and Genetic Improvement Center was started with the groundbreaking rites held recently in Kabankalan City.
Negros Occidental Governor Isidro Zayco, Kabankalan City Mayor Pedro Zayco, Negros State College of Agriculture President Dr. Freddie Maningo and other local officials led the ground breaking and lowering of the time capsule rites at the Old Bliss II site of the Negros State College of Agriculture in Brgy. Camingawan.
The center is a joint project of the Provincial Government, NSCA and the local government of Kabankalan City. NSCA donated the 5-hectare lot that will seat the center, a P3.8 M. share from the provincial government and P600,000 initial funding from the city government of Kabankalan.
The first of its kind in southern Negros, the center aims to upgrade the quality of local animals and provide training ground for the Animal Production students of the school, Maningo said.
Mayor Zayco also revealed during the ceremony that next month the city will start constructing its P60-M modern slaughter house. The slaughter house which will include a meat processing section will not only serve Kabankalan but also the neighboring towns and cities in the south.
The local government of Kabankalan also gave out P300,000 assistance to the Food Always in the Home Garden Plus project of NSCA which encourages people to engage in lot gardening and animal raising. Maningo also thanked Gov. Zayco for the Php3M. assistance for each of NSCA's branches in Hinobaan and Moises Padilla.
Dr. Nemesio Caņete, city agriculturist, said that the presence of the center will not only add productivity of knowledge to the students but will also boost the food sufficiency program of the city. (Kabankalan City/PIA/EAD) [top]
