Region 8 commemorates 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day

Tacloban City (November 26) -- The Leyte Family Development Organization (LEFADO) is spearheading the commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of World AIDS Day with the theme "Leadership: Stop AIDS and Keep the Promise" on December 1, 2008.

LEFADO is a non-government organization implementing the HIV and AIDS prevention and awareness project in partnership with the Department of Health Region 8 and the City Health of Tacloban, and supported by Global Fund through the Tropical Disease Foundation, Inc.

In celebration of the World AIDS Day in Tacloban, a motorcade along Tacloban City's major thoroughfares will be conducted on December 2, 2008 at 7:00 o'clock in the morning.

This will be followed by a short program at 10:00 o'clock in the morning at the Tacloban Ampitheater formerly Balyuan Tower.

The activities will be participated in by LEFADO, Department of Health Region 8, Tacloban City Health Office, City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Planning Office, City DILG, City PNP, POEA, OWWA, LGBT and Tacloban City EEOs.

These activities aim to raise awareness on the prevention of spread of HIV and AIDS in the Philippines, Ms. Betty Garrido, LEFADO executive director, said.

To kick-off said activities, a press conference will be conducted at 9:00 o'clock in the morning of November 29, Ms. Garrido added.

The 1st of December, World AIDS Day, is the day when individuals and organisations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic. 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. While the world has come a long ways since 1988, there is still much more to be done about HIV/AIDs. (PIA 8) [top]
