Prosecution junks libel suit vs broadcasters
By Freddie G. Lazaro
Vigan City (27 November) -- The Provincial Prosecution Office had dismissed a libel case filed against top-rated local broadcasters here.
This developed when the prosecution office found no probable cause for libel case against respondents: Lito Javier, a well-known anchorman of the Zona Libre radio program aired over DZVV – Bombo Radyo based in Vigan City, and Evelyn Quinto – Pascua, Radio Station Manager, who were charged by the complainants namely: Jerry Caluza, Voltaire Castro and Berting Lata on April 26, 2007.
The libel case against the respondents had something to do with a report aired over the radio program of Lito Javier about the alleged involvement of the complainants in a hold-up and kidnapping incident that happened on February 4, 2007 in Tagudin, Ilocos Sur.
Javier defends himself that his basis in airing the news report was the police blotter and logbook of the Tagudin police station that give details to the incident.
Fiscal Reynaldo Lacasandili, 2nd Assistant Provincial Prosecutor, said in his decision, "there is no proof of malicious imputation of a crime done by respondents against complainant, the respondents were in good faith because what they aired over the radio was based merly on the spot report made by PO3 Mamitag, which report is a public record."
