NEDA XI KR2 program funds Davao Oriental's high grade coconut shell charcoal project

Davao City (28 November) -- The NEDA Regional Office XI through Japan's Grant Assistance for Underprivileged Farmers, formerly known as the Kennedy Round 2 Program or "KR2", recently provided a grant to finance Davao Oriental's High Grade Coconut Shell Charcoal Project (HGCP).

Dir. Maria Lourdes D. Lim of NEDA XI turned over a check to the project's beneficiaries, namely: Baganga Ari-Industrial Multi Purpose Cooperative (BAIMUCO), Coconut Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative (COFARMCO) and the Cateel Mandaya Tribal Multi-Purpose Cooperative in a simple ceremony in Mati City, Davao Oriental on November 20, 2008. NEDA XI's KR2 Program provided P754,200 while the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) XI shared P233,600 for the project's total cost of P987.800.

Dir. Lim said that NEDA is supporting initiatives of farmers to enhance their productivity. She added that the charcoal project aims to demonstrate and promote high grade charcoal making in the province of Davao Oriental. It seeks to train local masons on the construction of the brick charcoal kiln; create awareness on the values of high grade charcoal within the locality; and initiate charcoal making. The project will be using a batch type brick charcoal kiln technology developed by PCA XI.

The turnover of the check, which also highlighted the launching of the project, was also witnessed by PCA XI Regional Manager Mr. Lornito Orillaneda, and Mati City Councilor and Chairman of the Agriculture Committee Rosendo Linzag, and Mr. Januario Co, representative of farmer beneficiaries.
