Army welcomes peaceful resolution of Lanao problems - MGen Pajarito

ICC Iligan City (28 November) -- The Philippine Army is always open to any peaceful solution and negotiation if only to solve the security problem in the two Lanao provinces.

This was emphasized by Maj. Gen. Nehemias G. Pajarito, Commander of the First Infantry Division (1ID) Philippine Army, who recently commended the 65th Infantry Battalion (IB), PA for their efforts in the surrender of at least seven members of the lawless MILF group (LMG) through peaceful negotiations.

The said LMG members surrendered to Lt. Col. Jed G. Motus, Battalion Commander of 65IB which is actually a unit of the 9th Infantry Division (9ID) from Eastern Visayas sent to serve as augmentation force in Lanao de Sur its headquarters in Barangay Gadungan, Madalum of the province.

Meanwhile, Pajarito lauded the MILF surrenderees for their decision to return back into the mainstream of the society who brought with them one unit each of the following firearms indicative of their serial numbers (SN):

A 5.56mm M653 (Elisco) SN 249328, a 7.62mm JI (FAL), SN 1771, US Rifle Cal.30MI (Garand), SN 1348039, US Rifle Cal.30MI (Grand Springfield), SN 142357, Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) Launcher, SN 770051, shot gun (Winchester) SN 1151974 and improvised grenade launcher with defaced SN.

He also urged them to convince their comrades who are still hiding in their mountain lairs to come out in the open so that they can also enjoy the benefits of the programs given by the government to rebel returnees.

The National Program for Unification and Development (NPUD) and the Balik (Bring A Rifle and Improve Livelihood) Program of the Department of National Defense (DND) are only some of such programs, Pajarito said. (RTD/PIA-Marawi) [top]
