Davao City (29 November) -- Two open source organizations in Mindanao shared top honors with some foreign organization during the 2008 Software Freedom Davao (SFD) Best Event competition.
These open source organizations are DabawenGNU Inc. of Davao City and FreeIT from General Santos City.
DabawenGNU Inc. shared the honors with teams from Nepal and Nicaragua while FreeIT with Trinidad and Tobago and Central America received special mention.
The groups bested 500 teams from over 90 countries that joined the SFD celebrations. They were selected based on the scope of their SFD activities, number of people reached and the quality of reporting. Top winners will receive OLPC laptops from SFD International.
Holden Hao, president of DabawenGNU Inc. said the Software Freedom Day is an annual international event aimed at celebrating Free Open Source Software (FOSS). One of the goals of SFD celebrations is to educate the public about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, government, in the home and in business.
Software Freedom International is a non-profit company that coordinates SFD at the global level while volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.
In the Philippines he said most SFD celebrations were coordinated by the International Open Source Network (IOSN) ASEAN+3.
He said in Davao they partner with the University of Mindanao and the Philippine Society of IT Educators (PSITE) with a half-day seminar attended by over 450 participants from Davao and nearby provinces. The principles of FOSS and its various technologies were presented to the participants and the seminar was capped with the open source animated movie, Big Buck Bunny.
In General Santos, FreeIT, led by Mylene Sereno of Mindanao State University held their SFD celebrations at the Notre Dame of Dadiangas University with a FOSS exhibit, seminar and other social activities. (PIA) [top]
