December 4-10 is Abra Week for Peace

Bangued, Abra (29 November) -- December 4–10 of each year had been declared as Abra Week for Peace.

The proclamation was made by Governor Eustaquio P. Bersamin by virtue of Executive Order No. 8, Series of 2008.

Abra Week for Peace is a follow through of the result of the Local Peace and Security Assembly (LPSA) held in the province of Abra last April of this year.

The celebration of the Abra Week for Peace is a multi-sectoral endeavor under the joint-leadership of the Provincial Governor and Representative Cecilia Seares-Luna aimed to attain the illusive peace and progress in the province.

The celebration shall be piloted this year with the remote municipality of Tineg as the first target of an outreach area which will be participated by all sectors and local government units (LGUs) in the province.

The kick-off program shall be held at the Bangued Town Plaza on December 4, with the opening of the Basketball Tournament and the simultaneous conduct of a Medical/Dental Mission within the Muslim community in Brgy. Agtangao, Bangued.

The basketball tournament will be participated in by four teams composed of the following: Team 1 – Abra clergy; Team 2 – Provincial Government and the 27 Municipal LGUs; Team 3 – Philippine National Police/Armed Forces of the Philippines (PNP/AFP); and Team 4 – Media/DepEd/Pastors of various religious sects others that the catholic church.

The second day shall involve more challenging tasks. There will be a province-wide Clean-up drive where all 27 municipal LGUs are enjoined to lead the clean-up drive in their respective areas of jurisdiction. The provincial team to be led by Governor Bersamin and PNP Director-General Jesus Verzosa shall proceed to Brgy Alaoa, Tineg for the simultaneous conduct of the Medical/Dental Mission, tree planting and peace dialogue.

The inmates of the Abra Provincial Jail shall also be visited and provided various services such as medical/dental mission, inter-faith services, parlor games and a concert.

December 7 will present a "Gospel Concert at the Park" at the Bangued Town Plaza.

December 8 shall usher a day of peace education and advocacy through the symposium on Building a Culture of Peace in the morning and the peace dialogue between the local chief executives (LCEs) and the Tribal Elders, both at the Divine Word College of Bangued Gymnasium.

There will also be an Agricultural Trade Fair at the Provincial capitol grounds and at the same time, a modern and ethnic dance competition will be held at the Bangued Town Plaza. The activities for the day will be capped of by a Concert at the Park and Awarding of the Best Booth and Agri Display and a display of fireworks at the Bangued Town Plaza.

The week-long event will culminate on December 10 with a grand parade to be participated by all sectors. The parade around the town proper will start from the St. James the Elder Cathedral grounds and converge at the Bangued Town Plaza where a Prayer Rally will be held, and will be highlighted by the signing of the peace covenant by representatives of the various sectors in the province.
