DOLE grants assistance to Serum Farmers Association of Basey

By Marivic A. Alcober

Catbalogan City (4 February) -- The Department of Labor and Employment, Region 8 through its Regional Director, Atty. Forter Puguon, released the amount of P467,510 to the Serum Farmers Association of Basey, Samar. The financial assistance was released through DOLE's Capacity Building Services for Livelihood Program.

According to Basey Information Officer Bonavie M. Robino, the released funds will be used for the association's technology system project.

Further, it was learned that the said organization will undergo Skills Training on New Technology on Farming, specifically Rice Production and acquire farm implements such as tractor, thresher and rice mill from the grant. The basis for selection of the recipient of the financial assistance is the organization's capability in the implementation of the project effectively.

The turn-over of the grant, according to Robino, was held in a formal ceremony last February 2, 2009 at the Basey New Audio Visual Hall. Director Puguon personally handed the financial assistance to Basey Municipal Mayor Wilfredo "Didi" Esturninos, who in return gave the said amount to the Serum Farmers Association.

Meanwhile, in its continued effort to bring the government closer to the people, DOLE provides livelihood assistance and job opportunities to the vulnerable sector of the community. Livelihood assistance is extended to deserving People's Organizations and associations based in the region for them to be able earn a living that would enable them to support their respective families.
