NFA procures 48,000 bags of palay in 2008

Negros Occidental (5 February) -- The Palay Procurement Program of the National Food Authority has procured 48,000 bags of clean and dry palay in 2008.

The bags were bought by the local office from 11 Farmer Cooperatives and 64 individual farmers. The palay was bought by NFA at P17/kg from the P11/kg selling price to encourage more farmers to sell their produce to NFA.

Provincial Manager Pablito Gemarino said the NFA also granted Fertilizer Incentive amounted to P1.5 million to 48 individual farmers and to nine Farmer Cooperatives. For every 2,500 net kilos of palay sold to NFA, the Fertilizer Incentive of P18,000 is given to farmers in addition to the palay support price.

The local food agency has collected last year P2.4 million in license and registration fee from 2,051 grains businessmen in the province. Collection had increased by 24 percent from P1.8 million compared to the previous year due to the increase in the number of Tindahan Natin outlets and massive inspection and saturation drive.

The Enforcement and Investigation Team apprehended 47 grains businessment and was able to collect administrative fines of P36,000. NFA violations include overpricing, short weighing of NFA rice, depletion/diversion of NFA stocks and no NFA license. (NFA/PIA/EAD) [top]
