Samar road project ahead of schedule over 25%

Tacloban City (February 6) -- The on-going improvement and widening of the national arterial road in Western Samar is moving faster than the target accomplishment schedule, the Department of Public Works and Highways informed.

The 59.53 kilometers road improvement project is among the President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's SONA Infrastructure Project under the Central Philippines Super Region, which DPWH Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. ordered the fast-tracked implementation.

Based on the monitoring report to the DPWH Central Office, construction of Catanguit-Calbiga Section in Samar has already attained 75.52 percent completion as of December 31, 2008, more than 25 percent ahead of the 49.07 percent target accomplishment.

With a project cost amounting to P1.458 Billion and with funds obtained from a loan agreement between the Government of the Philippines and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, the project that was started in January 2007 is expected for completion by the end of December 2009.

Undersecretary Rafael C. Yabut, who is in-charge of the Visayas operations, attributed the impressive development of the project to the effort of the contractor to hasten construction activities especially during sunny days.

The project consists of rehabilitation works on deteriorated portland concrete cement pavement, improvement and widening of shoulder, and patching/resealing of cracks on existing pavement prior to asphalt overlay.

Other work includes rehabilitation of seven (7) bridges, construction and/or upgrading of road shoulders, provision for drainage facilities, and slope protection works.

In order to sustain the positive progress of construction activity, the DPWH Region 8 office together with Project Management Office-Philippine Japan Highway Loan and concerned district office, are jointly resolving problems such as trees and other obstructions, and road right of way within the construction limit.

The DPWH also directed the contractor to install additional warning signs and barricades especially on the one-way and critical sections, in order to prevent any untoward incidents.

The DPWH reiterated that it would do all it could to complete the infrastructure projects in the Region according to schedule in compliance with the directive of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. (PIA 8) [top]
