DOH sets launching of 'HL to the Max' campaign

Legazpi City (12 February) -- The National Center for Health Promotion (NCHP) is set to implement a "DOH foundational campaign" that will highlight priority programs and services geared towards the country's attainment of its Millennium Development Goals (MDG) targets, including the prevention of unhealthy lifestyle, with the healthy campaign as the frontrunner.

Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) -mainly cardiovascular diseases (heart disease and stroke), cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes - are now a global epidemic. Chronic diseases claim 35 million lives every year, and together are the leading causes of death worldwide. Around 80 per cent of chronic disease deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries where most of the world's population live.

Based on DOH's latest department circular dated January 21, 2009 issued by the Health Undersecretary Mario C. Villaverde this campaign will be revitalized and repacked to focus on the prevention on risk factors that five rise to the incidence of the four main chronic diseases that affect all members of the family - from newborn to the elderly. Thus, the Healthy Lifestyle is the main message and it will highlight on the following 7 major vital healthy practices: No smoking, don't drink alcohol, no to dangerous drugs, Eat low-fat, low-salt, high fiber diet, present hypertension, do physical activities, and manage stress.

The campaign will be incorporated in the new brand "HL to the Max" and the grand launching will be on February 16, 2009 wherein DOH central office and all centers for health (CHDs), DOH attached agencies and retained hospitals will have simultaneous activities to launch the campaign, the department circular added.

The suggested activities that can be implemented during the campaign are: 1) Launch the "HL to the Max" campaign; 2) conduct "Hataw" exercises developed by the UP College of Kinetics for the DOH; 3) Conduct lecture/discussion/symposium; 4) conduct press conference; 5) TV and radio guesting; 6) hanging or display of streamers/tarpaulin; 7) announce the campaign during flag ceremonies; 8) conduct caravan/parade; 9) conduct of screening/laboratory examination and intervention campaign; and 10) poster making/jingle/slogan contest and quiz bee.
