PIA Press Release

Iloilo flood control project geared up for completion next year

Iloilo City (12 February) -- It's still 2010 as target for completion but all efforts of project components are towards it now.

Public Works and Highways 6 Dir. Rolando Asis said the Project Management Office (PMO) has set among its targets, other than the civil works, the finalization of the Operation and Maintenance Implementation Plan (OMIP), which is essential for the after care of the project.

Asis said the OMIP clarifies and defines the role of various stakeholders in the sustainability and maintenance of the civil works structures, which should also be coupled with cooperation and support of the project-influenced barangays.

The PMO, consultants, project managers and all support staff are also aiming at the full-swing implementation of the Community Based Solid Waste Management Program in project-influenced barangays.

Asis said that added to this, according to the IFCP work program, are the completion of the Social and Environmental aspects of the project and the completion of the Package 2 component which includes the improvements of Jaro River mouth, the Iloilo River and Upper Ingore Creek.

Actual accomplishment of the above package is placed at 88.83 percent as of January 2009.

In support of the accomplishments of Package 2 civil works, the Information Management Group (IMG) conducted a barangay assembly at Bgy. Banuyao, in Lapaz where concerns on the on-going civil works were discussed with the residents.

The team from the IMG and the community organizers focused on environmental practices that can enhance the sustainability and maintenance of the flood control structures in the barangays, like backyard composting, proper waste management and watershed management. (PIA 6/ESS) [top]
