First in Western Visayas, San Carlos City closes old dumpsite
Negros Occidental (12 February) -- San Carlos City officially closed its old dumpsite at Villarante Village, Barangay I recently in simple closing and turn over program held at the site.
It is the first dumpsite in Region VI to be technically closed with an approved Authority To Close (ATC) based on the guidelines on Safe Closure given by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) through the National Solid Waste Management Commission.
At its closure, the rehabilitated dumpsite was turned over to barangay officials with the promise to develop the site to a park.
The eyesore in the city is now a green low hill covered with vegetation and flowering plants. It is also provided with gas vents installed at regular intervals to release the minimal methane gases underneath for safety purposes.
The said dumpsite was converted into a controlled dumpsite in August 2006 and dumping of garbage stopped on September 13, 2007 with the opening of the city's ecological center and sanitary landfill located at Sitio Mabuni, Barangay Guadalupe.
The final closure project of the Villarante Dumpsite started in May 2008 with an allocated fund of P2 million from the city government. (San Carlos City/PIA/EAD) [top]
