NFA-Samar expects delivery of 20,000 bags of cheap rice

By Ninfa B Quirante

Catbalogan City (12 February) -- The National Food Authority (NFA) Samar said it is expecting some 20 thousand bags of rice this March or April to augment the much needed cheap rice in the market.

Presently, in Catbalogan Public Market, commercial rice prices range from P32.00-PP45.00 per kilo.

NFA rice supposedly the cheap rice for the poor mow commands P 30.00 which the poor could hardly afford, said a rice retailer who requests anonymity.

Some tricycle drivers could just afford half a kilo.

The public is clamoring for the P18.25 rice but NFA can not even supply the P25.00 per kilo.

NFA explained that the rice priced at P 18.25 and P25.00 are sold at the Tindahan Natin outlets distributed in different barangays in the province.

What is available, said NFA is the grains priced at P30.00 but is not really popular due to the comparatively high price. NFA added that should the public want to buy the P18..25 they should patronize a Tindahan Natin.

NFA rice retailers miss the long lines of rice buyers in the public market.

NFA said it is also trying to stretch out its stocks to help sustain the rice supply in the market. Besides because of the higher price of the commodity, fewer Catbaloganons buy the NFA rice.

One rice retailer confided to PIA that whereas before when rice was sold yet at P18.25 she could dispose up to 100 bags a day, but not anymore it is even difficult to sell the 20 bags allocation the whole day.

Meanwhile, NFA Samar boasts of their acquisition of some 6,000 nags of palay from rice farmers in Pinabacdao, Calbiga, Brgy Camorubuaan, Jiabong and Calbayog.

The price then was pegged at P17.00 per kilo and an indentive of P360.00 for fertilizer for one-time-delivery of 100 bags.

This, said NFA will be milled and will be sold again at the Tindahan Natin.

Secretary Arthur Yap of Agriculture said that the rice price increase is temporary and in two months time, harvest will come in and rice supply will flood the market. (PIA-Samar) [top]
