Region 8 gets 141 additional flatbed dryers under PGMA's CLEEP

Tacloban City (February 12) -- Eastern Visayas Region is expecting additional 141 units of flatbed dryers in March to beef up the first 21 units received and distributed to farmer organizations December as part of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program.

This was learned from Department of Agriculture Regional Executive Director Leo Caneda who said that Secretary Gabriel Claudio who is the Cabinet CLEEP steward for Region 8 has made arrangements for the additional units of flatbed dryers cognizant of the pressing need of the farmers for dryers, especially when the weather is not permissive.

At these times when the weather is so unpredictable and rains have become more frequent, farmers find difficulty looking where to dry their palay, Secretary Claudio said.

Feedbacks from farmers who are recipients of the first 21 units confirm how flatbed dryers are of great help to them because they are able to dry their palay during the rainy season and even at night.

This time, palay drying no longer disrupts other farming chores since the farmers can do it any time unlike before when they can only do it at day time when there is sun, the farmers claim.

A flatbed dryer can contain six tons of palay at one loading and is very economical since it uses rice hull as fuel compared to mechanical dryers, Director Caneda said.

Director Caneda bared that the 21 farmer beneficiaries have attended trainings so that they can properly operate and maintain the equipment.

Farmer beneficiaries were also educated on the operation of the facility where minimum fees are suggested to be collected from users to raise little fund for its maintenance cost, Director Caneda said.

The farmers are taught to have sense of ownership to the equipment so that they will maintain the same well. They are made to realize the difficulty of requesting funds for this type of project where one unit of flatbed costs P535,000.

Director Caneda bared that of the 21 flatbed units which were already distributed, 11 were given to farmer cooperatives and associations in the province of Leyte; 7 units were distributed to farmer groups in Southern Leyte; 2 units to Samar province and the remaining one unit was distributed to a farmer group in Eastern Samar.

All the 21 units of flatbed dryers are 100 percent installed and are already operational, Director Caneda said.

The recipients from the province of Leyte are Layog IA of Barangay Paguite, Abuyog; New Taprimco, Inc. of Barangay Imelda, Matag-ob; Batog Malibago IA of Barangay Batog, Jaro; Lamrag FISCO of Barangay Hubang, Alangalang; SJSB FISCO of Barangay San Jose, Ormoc City; Tamulcom FISCO of Barangay Tambis, Javier; Kasanag FISCO of Barangay Taboc of Ormoc City; KASAMMAVA FISCO of Barangay Maticaa, Ormoc City; MARLIS FISCO of Barangay Licuma, Ormoc City; and MAALSADA ISC of Barangay Dapdap, Alangalang.

For Southern Leyte, the recipients are Otama-Biasong IA of Barangay Otama, Hinunangan; MAGKASA IA of Barangay Pong-oy, San Juan; Cogon-Biasong IA of Barangay Biasong, Hinundayan; Habay-Tinaan FIMPC of Barangay Habay in San Francisco; Mega IA of Barangay Maac, and BUAC CIS of Barangay Concepcion, both in Sogod; and Bonbon CIS of Barangay Mauylab in Bontoc.

In Samar, the recipients are Bayo Pilar Roxas II CIP-IA at Barangay Roxas II in Calbayog City; and Gandara IPM RFA of Barangay Casab-ahan in Gandara.

In Eastern Samar, the lone recipient is JISA INC of Barangay Gap-ang in Dolores town. (PIA 8) [top]
