Bontoc, Mt. Province (14 February) -- A total of 15,000 assorted books (reference books and text books) were delivered last week at the DepEd Division Office.
The books are all donated by the Children International-Philippine Housing Foundation, Inc. (CI-PHFI) to the Division Office through the Provincial Government of Mt. Province.
Children International, a nonprofit humanitarian organization, aims to provide quality second hand reference books to pupils, students and community readers through the DepEd, Local Government Units, the Philippine National Library and charitable organizations in the Philippines.
The books are used as supplementary materials to help students learn subjects such as Math, Science and English and provide access to reference books.
The books benefit pupils of 12 identified public elementary schools (Central Schools) and students of the 48 public secondary schools in the province. Ceremonial distribution was conducted last Friday at the Division Office which was attended by Ms. Rebecca Fuellos, Chief of Programs of the Children International and Provincial Administrator Paulo Pagteilan.
In an interview, Fuellos said the CI-PHFI provides books upon formal request from interested schools, LGUs and charitable institutions.
She said the books (new and used textbooks) coming from the United States are donated to the Children International and these will be distributed to those who request.
It is the foundation who pays for the cost of freight of the books from US to the Philippine Port and other handling fees which cost $12,000 or about P.5 M, Fuellos said.
For its part, the recipient organization/school shoulders the transport cost of the books from the port to the site and the provision of other logistics in the unloading, sorting and distribution of books, she added.
In Mt. Province, the Provincial Government provided the amount of P45,000.00 for the hauling of these books which were delivered by the GEMSON Trucking Services. (PIA MP) [top]
