300 Mt Province students to be employed under SPES this summer

by Andrew Doga-ong

Bontoc, Mt. Province (14 February) -- Some 300 indigents students are expected to avail of the temporary jobs offered this summer under the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

The SPES program was announced by Miguela Limmayog, head of the DOLE provincial office here during the recent Provincial Peace and Order Council meeting held at the Mountain Province State Polytechnic College auditorium which was joined in by college officials and students leaders.

Limmayog said the SPES provides for employment opportunities to poor but deserving students in the different local government units (LGU) with 60 percent of their wages being paid by their LGU employers while the 40 percent will be the paid by the DOLE which come in the form of check in the name of the student-worker.

The LGUs who submitted their pledges of commitments which also represent their 60% counterpart include: Provincial government - P250,000; Bontoc - P100,000; Tadian - P59,400, and Besao - P35,000. The other municipalities are also expected to submit their respective pledge of commitment to the program.

Limmayor said this year's SPES budget for Mountain Province, or the 40% counterpart of DOLE to the wages to the summer job students, is P450,000.

Qualified to avail of the summer job program are high school, college and vocational students ages 15 -25 and also out of school youth who intend to enroll in the following school year.

Part of the government's Emergency Employment Program, the SPES intends to help students augment their educational expenses for the next school year amidst the looming financial economic crisis. (PIA Mountain Province) [top]
