Tayum LGU awards partners in municipal literacy program

by Maritess Beņas

Tayum, Abra (14 February) -- The Municipal Literacy Coordinating Council (MLCC) of this town chaired by Municipal Mayor Placido Glen Eduarte, Jr. will award their partners in the successful implementation of the Alternative Learning Systems (ALS) Program of the Department of Education in the district at the ALS Center in Poblacion, Tayum on February 13.

In an interview with Mrs. Cresencia T. Valeros, the District ALS Coordinator of Tayum who was awarded one of the three Most Outstanding Performers in the Cordillera Region by the DepED-CAR last January 30 in La Trinidad, Benguet, she said the awards to be given to their partners in the said program in Tayum had been long-overdue.

The awards were supposed to be given during the town fiesta celebrations last November 2008. However, the distribution of the certificates was moved at a later time to coincide with the graduation ceremony of the latest batch of trainees in the non-formal training on various skills and trades.

The award recognizes the contribution of individuals and groups/organizations to the realization of the education for all which is the goal of the DepEd in universalizing literacy, as well as their sustained effort to help promote the sustainability, expansion and institutionalization of the literacy program that would in turn help promote economic productivity among the marginalized and neglected sectors of society and which are expected to help cushion the impact of the global financial crisis which is now the primary concern of the Arroyo government.

The following are the awardees: The Most Supportive Barangay Council is Brgy. Velasco with Brgy. Captain Victor Escalante as chairman. The barangays of Cabaroan, Patucannay and Basbasa are the 1st, 2nd and 3rd runners up respectively. Most supportive member of the Sangguniang Bayan is Hon. Agustin Barbieto; Most Supportive Kagawad is Hon. Felicita Azarcon; and the Most Supportive Brgy. Secretary is Felicidad Tejano. Ms. Nemesia Tauro is recognized as the Most Active School ALS Coordinator.

Aside from Valeros, other awardees from Abra recognized by Dep-Ed CAR are Mr. Rey Calinap, Mobile teacher in the Bucay District as one of the 5 Most Outstanding Mobile Teachers, Municipal Mayor Albert Guzman of Dolores LGU as 4th Placer in the LGU category and Vice-Mayor Socorro Guzman as 2nd placer in the Program category of the awards.
