DSWD secretary gives cash grants to poor Abreņos

by Maritess Beņas

Bangued, Abra (14 February) -- Secretary Esperanza Cabral of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in her official visit to the towns of San Juan and Dolores in Abra awarded in behalf of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo funds for the various projects implemented in the poverty-stricken communities on Thursday, February 12, 2009.

Cabral was joined by DSWD-CAR Director Porfiria Bernardez and provincial heads of the various line agencies in Abra as she distributed the Cash for Work checks plus other benefits to the project beneficiaries.

In San Juan, the secretary distributed CFW checks in the amount of P1,950.00 per individual who worked on the rehabilitation of the Malanas Irrigation System including the flood control system along Brgy. Baug which was damaged by typhoon Karen in August 2008. Five barangays are benefited by the said irrigation system.

Aside from the CFW checks, Cabral also handed the P100,000.00 check for the SEA-K projects of 20 individuals for the initial capitalization of their micro-enterprise activities; 4 wheelchairs to four beneficiaries, and the "KATAS ng VAT for Lolo & Lola" in the amount of P500.00 per person.

After the ceremonial distribution to the beneficiaries in San Juan, Mayor Marco Bautista led the secretary to the project sites for inspection of the implementation of the CFW particularly the Maslanas Irrigation system and the Baug Flood Control System.

Cabral and her entourage motored to Brgy. Namit-ingan, Dolores where she also distributed the CFW checks, seed capital for the 15 members of SEA-K in Dolores, "KATAS ng VAT for Lolo & Lola" plus the distribution of food-for-school iron-fortified rice for the day care children in the municipality.

The secretary also graced the inauguration and blessing of the Namit-ingan Community Larning Center. The Community Learning Center is just one of the three community learning centers in Dolores that were inaugurated that day. The others are found in the barangays of Mudiit and Cardona.

These community learning centers were donated by the members of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Inc. through their special education program. Initiated way back in the 1960's, the Federation call this project, "School to the Barrios".

Since the federation started funding the schools construction projects of the couple executives Mayor Albert Guzman and Vice-Mayor Socorro Guzman of Dolores a few years ago, they have already put up a total of 8 school buildings in the various barangays in the municipality.

Meanwhile, the federation also donated a school building to the Our Lady of Fatima School in Bucay Parish. This is the first private school the Federation has given funds because their "School to the Barrrios" Project was meant for the construction of public schools. The donation to Our Lady of Fatima School was made because of the request made by Bishop Leopoldo C. Jaucian, DD after efforts to replace the school buildings wrought by fire and caused the displacement of some of the students there. (PIA-Abra) [top]
