Mothers, senior citizens join Bacolod skills training

Bacolod City (16 February) -- More than one thousand beneficiaries took part in the Practical Skills Development Training sponsored by the Bacolod City Department of Social Service and Development in 2008.

Records from the DSSD showed that 1,245 mothers, senior citizens and women joined in skills training in food processing and preservation, fabric conditioner and dishwashing liquid making, fashion jewelry making, herbal tincture making, garment making, Christmas decor making, vinegar and coco soy sauce making, soap making and beaded slippers making.

The total cost of the training reached P57, 734 and is funded by the Bacolod City government barangay council and Person to Person Social Action Program (PPSAP).

DSSD-OIC Sally Abelarde said the purpose of the training is to develop the participants' "skills and ability to engage on a small scale business for them to augment their family income."

The Arroyo administration is encouraging displaced workers to learn new skills especially those displaced employees affected by the global meltdown so that they can move on and provide for themselves and their family.

Various government line agencies like Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Trade and Industry, DSWD, DPWH and others are each involved in programs for employment and skills training to soften the impact of unemployment and poverty. (PIA-LOL) [top]
