DENR Iligan marks Valentine's Day with planting activity

by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (16 February) -- A significant day to remember for those involved in February 14 planting along riverbanks of 50 bamboo grass and 15 jackfruit seedlings by its stakeholders and adoptors, in Barangay Santiago, Iligan City.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO), Iligan City, spearheaded the riverbank planting along the Rivers of Iligan and Mandulog.

Forester Arnulfo Osio, who represented CENR Officer Mamacaya Lucman in a radio program at RMN Iligan dubbed as 'PIA Action Line' hosted by the Philippine Information Agency, Iligan City Information Center, said that this is in line with the Department's nationwide program on the Green Philippine Program (GPP) and the city's local government program on "Pakgang Baha" and "Bangon Suba".

In coordination with the local government City Environment and Management Office (CEMO), we were able to tap the local residents, especially those living near the riverbanks where the seedlings been planted, to be the adoptors, said Osio.

We require stakeholders to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) from the religious sector, the non-governmental organization, and adoptors as well, with the DENR for this program which signifies everyone's responsibility as to nurturing these seedlings to become full grown plants and trees, Osio explained.

Meanwhile, Ermelinda Tobias, director of the Integrated Bamboo-Based Livelihood Development Project (IBLDP), this city, has initiated to have a bamboo planted along riverbanks because it typically grows in this area, and absorbs water to prevent flooding and could be an economic value, contributory to our city's bamboo industry, Tobias emphasized. We have IBLDP.

Other areas being planted on February 15 were along riverbanks of Barangays Upper Hinaplanon and San Roque. Involved groups from the academe, small scale mining operators, civic clubs, Department of Science and Technology employees, have planted 135 bamboo propagates and 135 jackfruit seedlings, Osio said.

Osio acknowledged the assistance extended by their seedling providers like the National Power Corporation (NPC) in Ditucalan, Iligan City and the City Agriculture Office.

As the saying goes, "DENR CARES, DENR DARES", thus, we dare challenge everyone to join the upcoming planting schedules for the whole month of February, an undertaking to protect and identify watersheds and water resources, Osio expressed. (PIA Lanao del Norte) [top]
