PGMA orders immediate identification of agri lands

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Manila (23 February) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered all agricultural lands to be immediately identified and delineated with clear boundary markers on the ground.

This order of the President is found in Executive Order No. 774, entitled "Reorganizing the Presidential Task Force on Climate Change (PTFCC)," which she signed on December 26, last year, creating under it a Task Group on Agriculture for such purpose.

The President said every effort will be exerted to cleanse the fields of chemical pollutants and extend and persuade owners and caretakers to produce nutritious food crops in a sustainable manner.

Per EO774, public open places along sidewalks and portions of roads and parking lots, will be rendered irrelevant by the mind-shift to non-motorized and collective transportation systems and devoted to productive use through sustainable urban farming.

"These spaces will then be planted with nutritious fruit crops, vegetables, spices and medicinal herbs, among others," the President emphasized.

Thus all persons living in the city who wish to care for a plot of arable land to plant their vegetables will be provided a stewardship agreement.

The agreement will bind the holder to sustainably use the land, plant it with food and other plants like nutritious vegetables, fruits, flowers, spices, etc. and receive benefit from its produce, EO774 specifies. (PIA 10) [top]
