Opposition spokesperson to advocate reforms on education in Senate

Tuguegarao City (23 February) -- United Opposition Spokesperson Atty. Adel Tamano, President of the Pamantasang Lungsod ng Maynila, expressed his intention to run as senator in the 2010 elections to advocate reforms in order to improve and achieve a competitive quality of education for the country.

Tamano said only 13% was allocated from the general budget of the gov't for education which is not enough to sustain all the needs of the students which therefore leads to poor quality of education most especially in the remote areas.

"The biggest portion of our budget goes to payment of debt and pork barrel of the officials. Only 13% goes to education that's why the quality of education in our country remains inferior," he said.

Tamano further stated that the people need to have a voice in the senate to fight for the increase of the budget for education and to set some priorities on education programs.

He also expressed his opposition to the proposed additional school year for nursing courses which is, according to him, impractical amid poverty and economic crisis.

He also expressed his opposition to the on-going random drug testing in all schools in the country posting a reason that it only entails waste of billions of pesos for the drug test.

On the other hand, Tamano also appreciated programs and projects of the present administration citing the laudable development of the country's infrastructure and agriculture.

The spokesperson, who hails from Mindanao and a Muslim, also condemned the ignominy acts of the Abu Sayyaf Group who are responsible in the series of kidnapping incidents in Mindanao area. (PIA Cagayan) [top]
