Task force apprehends thousands bd. ft. of illegally-cut logs

Ilagan, Isabela (23 February) -- Incessant rainfall during the week gave illegal loggers splendid time to transport illegally cut logs through the Cagayan River where the Task Force on Environmental Protection team apprehended thousands of bd ft. of illegally cut logs in this town.

Provincial Administrator Paul Fernandez said the members of the Task Force on Environmental Protection apprehended three "Bugadors" (log porters) in barangay Cabisera 8 with them a total of 10,000 bd. ft of assorted logs (round and square logs).

The logs purportedly originated from Upper Tappa in San Mariano, Isabela were transported through the Cagayan River down to Ilagan.

Another unknown volume of logs estimated to be thousands more were again apprehended by the task force.

The creation of Task Force on Environmental Protection by Governor Grace Padaca has yielded thousands of illegally cut logs and has lodged criminal charges to illegal loggers in the Provincial Prosecutors Office.

Governor Padaca's priority agenda, the preservation and protection of environment was emphasized during her State of the Province Address (SOPA) or Ulat sa Bayan last February 9, 2009.

In her SOPA, Gov Padaca warned illegal loggers to stop depleting the forest areas of the province as this causes flashfloods as experienced in the last few months which destroyed rice and corn crops in low-lying areas especially those that are near the rivers.

The task force is a multi-sectoral in membership from the Department of Environment of Natural Resources (DENR), Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Non-government organizations (NGOs) and from the provincial government's environment department.
