58-IB harassed by NPA in Lianga town

Lianga, Surigao del Sur (23 February) -- The local government of Lianga convened recently the 1st Municipal Peace and Order Council (MPOC) meeting here after reorganizing thru EO 739.

Mayor Roy Higino Sarmen, MPOC Chairman was the presiding officer in the conference attended by Vice Mayor Robert Lala, MPOC Vice Chairman Col. Benjamin Pedralvez, Capt. Agapito Acebes of Philippine Army, PNP and other members of the MPOC.

During the meeting, Battalion Commander of 58IB Col. Benjamin S. Pedralvez reported that on February 1 at 11:45 am the checkpoint within the vicinity of Samilla Gym in Lianga was fired upon by the NPA. He said, "action taken on that matter is to conduct a pursuit operation, where again we have an encounter in Purok 5 of Brgy. San Isidro of this municipality last February 7."

Col. Pedralvez said, "Insurgency is not only the AFPs concern, our concern is only the armed component, the NPA. The political, socio and economic factors is the LGUs concern".

The recent skirmish between the 58IB and the NPA resulted to the mass evacuation of the residents of the area to the Municipal Gym in Lianga.

The Municipal Social Welfare Development Office (MSWDO) reported that 110 families and 478 dependents evacuees have already received food assistance and health services.

Other assistance were also provided by the Provincial Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO), PNRC-Surigao del Sur chapter and Vice Mayor Robert Lala who personally give food and cash assistance. (PIA-Surigao del Sur) [top]
