Gov't donates one-hectare land to congregation of nuns in Butuan

Davao City (23 February) -- The Southern Philippines Development Authority (SPDA) recently turned over a one-hectare piece of land to a congregation of nuns in Butuan City at the instance of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

SPDA Chair Saeed A. Daof and SPDA Administrator Sultan 'Yahya' Jerry Tomawis turned over the government donation to the Congregation of the Sisters Disciples of Jesus in the Eucharist of Butuan City (CSDJE-Butuan City).

The donation was received in behalf of the congregation by Archbishop Juan de Dios Pueblos in simple turn-over ceremonies at the Presidential Management Staff (PMS).

The turn-over was witnessed by then PMS Director-General Cerge Remonde, now press secretary, and PMS Undersecretary Charito Eliger.

"Bishop Pueblos thanked SPDA and said that the property shall be developed into a humanitarian project that shall provide shelter and livelihood education to battered and abused women and children," said the SPDA press release about the event.

For his part, Secretary Remonde "lauded the SPDA-Butuan City Diocese's cooperation in promoting a culture of peace and social justice in Mindanao."

The SPDA added that according to the land-donation agreement, "the Congregation will finance the construction of the building and improvement of the premises."

"The program of activities is expected to start after the signing of the conditional deed of donation, and the construction of infrastructure completed a year after the signing." (OPS-PIA XI) [top]
