Aklan registers 57 VAWC cases in less than 2 months

Kalibo, Aklan (24 February) -- In less than 2 months from January 2009 to date, the Philippine National Police' Women and Children Protection Section (WCPS) reported that there are 57 crimes committed against women in Aklan.

SPO4 Profetiza I, Morato, Chief of the WCPS, PNP-Aklan, also reported that for the same period, 17 crimes were committed against children, while there are 16 crimes committed by youth offenders.

Morato bared this report during the meeting of the Aklan Gender and Development Commission (AGADC) which was held recently to plan out activities to celebrate Women's Month in March.

Crimes committed against women during the period include acts of lasciviousness, alarm and scandal, concubinage, oral defamation, physical injury, rape, threat, trespass to dwelling, unjust vexation, and violation of RA 9262.

Crimes committed against women under RA 9262 had the highest number, with 38 cases.

Crimes committed against children include seduction, acts of lasciviousness, physical injury, rape, stoning, threat, unjust vexation, RA 7610 and RA 9208.

Crimes committed by youth offenders include malicious mischief, physical injury, robbery, theft, threat, and unjust vexation.

Of the figures, 4 cases were filed on crimes committed against women, 5, crimes against children and 1 case for a crime committed by a youth offender.

SP04 Morato said that the province of Aklan has a total of 36 policewomen deployed in the different municipalities of Aklan, tasked to enforce all penal laws related to the protection of women and children from abuse.

Morato appealed to the community to help the PNP mitigate crimes committed against women, and specifically requested the presence of social workers during operations. (PIA) [top]
