AFP condemns rebel daughter's death

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (7 March) -- Commander of the 10th Infantry Division Major General Reynaldo Mapagu condemned the death of Rebelyn Pitao, daughter of New People's Army Pulang Bagani head Kumander Parago.

After declared missing in 24 hours, the body of Pitao was found dumped in a creek at Purok 5, Barangay San Isidro, Carmen, Davao del Norte at around 6 pm. Pitao is found with three stab wounds at her left breast. Authorities claimed that the victim was tortured before her untimely death.

The 10th ID commander clarified in a press conference that his command may be a major suspect as they have been obviously looking for Kumander Parago all these years. However, he said "the army won't go to that personal level of fighting."

The official respects the ongoing investigation headed by the Philippine National Police and he hopes for the investigating body to immediately resolve the case so to identify the individual or group behind the killing.

He instructed his men to be in full alert as retaliation from the part of the NPA group will possibly take place.

Mapagu hopes that the victim's family and the public will keep their emotions controlled and that the incident won't spark up further conflicts between the insurgents and the army.

Meanwhile, Senior Supt. Ramon Apolinario of the Davao City Police Office is still waiting for the results from the crime and laboratory division as this would serve as an initial evidence for them to pursue the investigation.

The team, he said, is working with very few evidence, only that of the testimony from the tricycle driver who witnessed the abduction and the residents who found the dead body of Pitao.

Apolinario is asking the public to help the authorities forward the case by reporting any essential information that could solve Pitao's case.

"Rebelyn Pitao", a teacher at the St Peter's College of Toril, was abducted March 4 at the corner of Oro Subdivision and bago Galera while on board a motorcycle on her way home.

Moreover, Evangeline Pitao, the victim's mother, claimed that her family is very sure that the Military Intelligence Group is behind the death of Rebelyn. She also narrated how Kumander Parago was deeply angered by the incident. (PIA XI) [top]
