LGUs urged to support Earth Hour today, March 28

Iloilo City (28 March) -- Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Ronaldo Puno called on local government units to participate in the activities organized by Earth Hour Philippines 2009, including the switching off of lights for one hour during the Earth Hour today, March 28, at 8:30 pm.

"The simple act and small sacrifice of switching off our lights during Earth Hour will certainly generate awareness on the importance for all nations of the world to undertake decisive and immediate measures to address the issue of climate change," Puno said in a DILG press report.

Launched in Australia in 2007, Earth Hour is a massive social movement aimed to mobilize action against climate change through the simple act of turning off lights.

In his memorandum to provincial governors, city and municipal mayors and punong barangays issued through the Office of DILG Undersecretary Austere Panadero, Puno urged local government units to, as far as practicable, turn off the non-essential lights and electrical appliances in provincial, city, municipal and barangays halls for one hour or at least within Earth Hour.

On the other hand, Panadero also encouraged LGUs to use compact fluorescent lights instead of incandescent bulbs in government installations to minimize electricity usage and costs.

This year, Earth Hour Philippines 2009 hopes to involve 10 million Filipinos and 500 businesses in key cities and towns throughout the country.

According to the DILG press report over a hundred corporations, schools, public and private organizations have already pledged their support to Earth Hour 2009 which is an initiative of the WWF, the Department of Energy, Green Army Network and SWITCH movement. (PIA) [top]
