Feast of 3 Kings ends Christmas season

But giving service, gifts should go on all year round

Tacloban City (January 6) -- The Feast of the Three Kings marks the end of the festive Christmas Season but the spirit of Christmas, gift giving and service must go on all year round.

The Filipino people could learn from the three wise men or magi. They were supposed to be pagans who went on searching for "Him who is born King of the Jews." They had no knowledge where He was and just followed the stars until they found him.

The Filipinos are united as to where they want the country to be in the future. That goal will only be reached if the Filipino people will take the same path together hand in hand. The three wise men decided to stick together and trust and help one another for the success of their search.

The three wise men traveled to Bethlehem from the East and brought the Baby Jesus, royal gifts of gold, myrrh and frankincense. There is a symbolic meaning of their gifts: gold, the royal metal, which signified that Jesus is King; frankincense, the symbol of prayer, that Jesus is the Son of God; and myrrh, which is used to anoint the dead, that Jesus has to die for the salvation of man.

The Filipino Catholics are exhorted that since Epiphany is the celebration of the proclamation of Jesus as King, the faithful should make Christ the King in their lives and let Him reign in their person, family and nation.

According to tradition, the feast celebrates the three manifestations of Jesus' divinity: His birth, the adoration of the Magi, and His baptism.

Also known as the Feast of Light that marked the beginning of Jesus' dedication to His divine mission as the Savior and Light of the world, the Church said, The Feast of the Epiphany brings to a perfect fulfillment all the purposes of Advent. The young Messiah is revealed as the Light of the nations.

It is hoped that the Filipino people will see that same true Light and follow that Light together toward the fulfillment of their dream as a nation.

Christians believe that Jesus was God's gift as a sign of His love for mankind. It is for this reason that in many countries of the world, people give gifts to their loved ones and to the poor on this day.

God's gift to mankind remains forever, not just for one day but for always. Thence, it is but proper that given gift through service should not be done only during the Christmas Season but all year round. (PIA 8) [top]
