PGMA graciously welcomes honor accorded her as adopted daughter of Ifugao

Tacloban City (January 7) -- In her visit to the Cordillera Region on Wednesday, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo graciously welcomed the distinct honor accorded her as an adopted daughter of the province of Ifugao.

This was made possible through a resolution which was unanimously endorsed by the Provincial Board and duly approved by Ifugao Governor Teddy Baguilat, Jr. All thoughout her speech during the inauguration of the Ifugao State University, President Arroyo, to the delight of the audience, used the local dialect in which she is as proficient as a native.

"Naragsak ak a kumablaaw kadakayo a kailiak kas maysa nga anak ti Ifugao," President Arroyo said at the opening of her speech. ("I am very happy to greet you as my province mates being now a daughter of Ifugao)."

President Arroyo inaugurated on January 6, the Ifugao State University which she said will further fortify the excellent quality of education being offered to the populace of the Cordillera Region in Northern Luzon.

The ISU is the third state tertiary educational institution to be established during the incumbency of President Arroyo, who remains very popular and well-loved in this mountainous region like her late father President Diosdado Macapagal.

Ifugao Rep. Solomon Chungalao captured the sentiment of the Cordillera people when he said, "only President Arroyo, no other Chief Executive of the country, has done so much for the province of Ifugao and the Cordillera Region as a whole. We owe her so much for the development we now, as well as our future generations will enjoy."

Prior to the ISU inauguration, the President also inaugurated the Kalinga State University in the City of Tabuk, Kalinga and the Mountain Province State Polytechnic College in Bontoc, Mountain Province. The other state university in the area is the Benguet State University (BSU) in La Trinidad, Benguet which was established during the term of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

The ISU caters to the education of the Cordillera youth specializing in agricultural and allied courses like engineering, forestry, and nursing.

President Arroyo underscored her administration's accomplishments particularly on enabling the youth in the area to have quality education just like their counterparts in other areas of the Philippines, so they too, could become globally competitive in the 21st century.

The President noted that education has helped in the furtherance of the socio-economic development of the Region. She also expressed gratitude to the officials of Ifugao province as well as the national government, for the completion of her priority infrastructure projects in the Region which include the P2-billion Halsema Highway, various bridges and farm-to-market roads which not only improved the output of the agricultural sector but also boosted the tourism industry "especially with the sustained visit and preservation of the Ifugao Rice Terraces."
