67 Zambo students get scholarship certificates

by Vic Larato

Zamboanga City (13 January) -- 67 students from the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) and two other state colleges were awarded Monday scholarship certificates pursuant to Ordinance No. 332, granting of academic scholarships to poor but deserving students starting School Year 2009-2010.

Mayor Celso Lobregat who lead the awarding said the city government scholars had been chosen from the top 10 of the class from different public secondary schools in the city and they are required to maintain a passing grade of 2.0 or its equivalent in their course.

Of the number, three are enrolled at the Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College and three more at the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology with WMSU having the most number of scholars taking up four-year courses.

"Study hard to maintain your scholarships. I really want all of you to finish your studies especially because you belong to the first batch," Lobregat told the scholars, adding that more scholars are expected to be taken in the succeeding years.

So far, the city government had already released the amount of P335,000 for the scholarships during the first semester. Similar amount will be released soon for the second semester.

Under the ordinance, each scholar is entitled to P5,000 tuition fees per semester. Any excess amount, if there is any, will be given to them.

Present during the awarding of certificates were Councilor Rudy Lim, chair of the City Council's Committee on Education, Assistant Schools Superintendent Norma Vecina, some members of the Local School Board, and Councilor Joe-fel delas Peņas together with City Treasurer Soledad Li, City Human Resource Management Officer Erlina Sanchez and staff.
